  • Hand out one tie to each child.

  • Ask them to think about the different houses (We had banners hanging around in the library) and choose the colors they like best and model their ties after that house. This is a good time to discuss the different traits of each house.

  • Encourage the audience to clap and encourage participants after they have been sorted.

Reading Chapters 1-4: (K-2nd) read seperatly from (3rd-5th)

  • Use the images for the storyboard to describe what happens in chapters 1-3

  • Read Chapter 4

  • Discuss with participants the opportunity to earn points for their "houses" by completing their reading challenges. Let them know they will have a challenge sheet each week that lists several chapters that they are responsible for reading on their own, or having somone read to them. If they have their reading challenge signed by an adult and returned, he/she will earn 50 points for his/her house!

Wizard Craft/Activity: Herbology - planting mandrakes.

  • Hand out one knee high stocking to each participant.

  • Set out a few bowls of grass seed, some packets of flower/herb seeds, and some dirt.

  • Ask participants to roll down their stocking so they can get to the toe.

  • Instruct students to empty the contents of one seed packet into the toe of their stocking.

  • Then, scoop two scoops of grass seed into the toe of the sock.

  • Next, using a plastic cup, dump 2-ish cup-fulls of potting soil into the toe.

  • Press everything firmly into the toe. (It should resemble a little potato)

  • Tie the stocking at the base of the dirt.

  • Leaving a 3 or 4 inch tail, trin any excess stocking.
